Soapstone Starter Carving Kit
Everything needed for a first carving in one kraft carry pack: two flat soapstone blocks about 3" x 3" x ¾", a steel rasp, and four grades of wet-sanding paper from 100 up to 2000 grit, with the steps printed on the pack itself. Two blocks means one to practise on and one to keep. What you carve is up to you — a pendant, an inukshuk, a chess piece, a small animal.
Soapstone (steatite) is soft enough to shape with a rasp alone — no chisel, no hammer, no mallet — which is why it has been the starting stone for carvers for generations. Draw your design in pencil, file away what you do not want, wet-sand up through the grits, then rinse, dry and oil for a deep polished shine.
Suitable for ages 6 and up and for complete beginners. Carve over a damp towel and wet the stone often: it keeps the dust down and shows you the true colour as you work.
