This pale golden glass was made in the desert about 29 million years ago, probably by a meteorite.

Libyan Desert Glass is real glass made by nature, not in a factory. Scientists think a meteorite impact or an asteroid exploding in the air melted the sand into glass, which then cooled and scattered across the Sahara. Pieces are buttery yellow, often with sandblasted, pitted surfaces and little bubbles inside.

It's one of the rarest and strangest things we sell. It even turns up in ancient Egyptian jewellery: the scarab on a famous pectoral of Tutankhamun is carved from it. Collectors love its story, and some people keep it as a stone of confidence and warm, sunny energy.

How to use it

  • Hold it up to a light to see inside
  • Add it to a meteorite or tektite collection
  • Keep it in a small display box
  • Tell its origin story to a curious friend

Care: Keep it in a soft pouch or box so other stones don't scratch it.
