This is a rough piece of calcite, left the way it came out of the rock, with glassy amber layers and frosty white patches. The name calcite comes from calx, the Latin word for lime. You'll also hear this one called amber calcite or golden calcite.
That warm colour really glows when light comes through it, especially on a sunny sill. People traditionally link honey calcite with confidence and courage, so it's a favourite for desks and workspaces. No two chunks are shaped or coloured quite the same.
