From the outside, a geode looks like a plain, lumpy rock. Crack it open and it might be full of crystals.

Geodes form when bubbles or hollows in rock slowly fill with mineral-rich water, and crystals grow inward from the walls. This bag holds a mix of whole, unopened geodes in different sizes. Most are hollow and lined with sparkly quartz, but nature keeps a few surprises, and some are solid inside.

Cracking one is pure suspense, and the reveal never gets old. It's a hit at birthday parties, sleepovers and science days. Everyone gets to be the first person ever to see the inside of their rock.

How to use it

  • Wrap a geode in an old sock or towel
  • Tap it firmly with a hammer until it splits
  • Wear safety glasses while you crack
  • Keep the best halves as a pair

Care: Do your cracking outside on a hard surface, keep kids supervised, and rinse the halves in water to show off the crystals.
