The basics

So what is selenite, really?

Selenite is a form of gypsum, the same mineral used in drywall and plaster. Its name comes from Selene, the Greek moon goddess, for that soft glow.

Honest bit: most wands, towers and lamps sold as selenite are satin spar, a fibrous gypsum with silky stripes. True selenite is clear and glassy.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • A lot of folks set their other crystals on a selenite plate or bowl overnight as a cleansing ritual.
  • Selenite lamps are a favourite for a soft glow during a wind-down routine.
  • It's traditionally linked with calm and clarity, so people keep a tower on the desk.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Selenite

  • Water: keep it dry
  • Sun: fine
  • Keep it dry. Water dulls the sheen and can slowly dissolve it.
  • Dust it with a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush.
  • It scratches and chips easily, so give it its own spot.

Straight talk

Real selenite or satin spar?

Most selenite in crystal shops is satin spar, and that includes many of our wands, towers, lamps and logs. It's real, natural gypsum, just the fibrous kind. Coloured pieces can be natural or dyed, so ask us if you're unsure about one.

Good questions

Selenite questions people ask us

What is selenite used for?

Mostly as a cleansing spot for other crystals, and as decor. Plates, bowls and lamps are the favourites. It's traditionally linked with calm and clarity.

Can selenite get wet?

Best not. It's gypsum, which slowly dissolves in water and loses its shine. Dust it instead.

How do you cleanse selenite?

Most people say it doesn't need it. If you'd like a ritual, try smoke, sound or moonlight. Skip water and salt.

Is satin spar the same as selenite?

They're both gypsum. Selenite is the clear, glassy kind and satin spar is the silky, fibrous kind. In crystal shops, satin spar is usually sold as selenite.
