Light the tip, blow it out, and a sweet, woody smoke drifts up that smells a bit like citrus and pine.

Palo santo means holy wood in Spanish. It comes from a tree called Bursera graveolens, which grows in dry forests of South America. There, the wood has been burned in homes and ceremonies for generations. These sticks are traditionally gathered from fallen branches and trees that have died on their own.

People burn it to mark a fresh start: a new home, a tidied room, the end of a long week. The scent is gentle and warm, not heavy like some incense. Lots of folks pair it with yoga, meditation or a quiet cup of tea.

How to use it

  • Light one end, let it flame, then blow it out
  • Waft the smoke gently around a room
  • Rest it in a shell or heatproof dish
  • Try the six-pack, or stock up with the bag

Care: Never leave a smouldering stick alone, and store the rest somewhere dry so the scent lasts.
