What is Buddhism?

Buddhism is a spiritual tradition that was born in northeastern India over 2,500 years ago. It's based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, meaning "the enlightened one."

This philosophy focuses on personal spiritual development, striving for a deep insight into the true nature of life and the interconnectedness of all things. Central to Buddhism is the concept of reducing suffering and attaining enlightenment through wisdom, ethical conduct, and meditation.

It has developed into various schools and practices over the centuries, with Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana being the most recognized.

Who was Buddha?

Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, was a spiritual teacher from ancient India. Born into a royal family around the 5th century BC, he lived a sheltered life of luxury until one day he ventured outside the palace and was confronted with the realities of human suffering.

This event sparked a deep desire within him to understand the nature of suffering and how to overcome it. After years of rigorous meditation and ascetic practices, he achieved enlightenment, gaining profound insights about life and existence.

From then on, he was known as the Buddha and spent the remainder of his life teaching others the path to enlightenment.

What do Buddha statues represent?

Buddha statues are more than just decorative elements; they carry deep symbolism and meaning. Each statue represents different aspects of the Buddha's life and teachings.

For instance, a statue of the Buddha in a meditation pose, often with legs crossed and hands resting in his lap, signifies enlightenment, as it reflects the moment the Buddha attained spiritual awakening under the Bodhi tree. The laughing Buddha, with its cheerful, plump figure, symbolizes happiness, prosperity, and abundance. A Buddha statue in the protection pose, with the right hand raised and facing outwards, represents courage and offers protection from fear, delusion, and anger.

Each Buddha statue is a tangible representation of these important teachings and principles, designed to inspire and guide practitioners on their spiritual journey.

Where to place my Buddha statues?

Buddha statues should be placed in respectful and clean spaces. Many people choose to place them on altars or in meditation rooms. They can also be displayed in living rooms or gardens.

Always make sure the Buddha statue is at eye level or higher to show respect.
