The basics

So what is opalite, really?

Opalite is glass, made on purpose to have an opal-like glow. It's not natural opal and it doesn't come out of the ground.

Tiny particles in the glass scatter light. Hold it over something dark and it glows blue. Hold it up to the light and it turns warm and peachy.

Some sellers call it "sea opal" or "opal moonstone". It's the same glass, and we'd rather just tell you.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • It's a favourite bracelet bead. That glow shows up nicely against skin.
  • A lot of folks keep a small carving on the nightstand as part of a wind-down routine.
  • It's traditionally linked with fresh starts and easy conversation, so some people carry a piece to a new job.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Opalite

  • Water: fine
  • Sun: fine
  • Water is fine. Rinse it and dry with a soft cloth.
  • It's glass, so it can chip if dropped or knocked against harder stones.

Straight talk

Is opalite a real stone?

Opalite is man-made glass, full stop. It isn't natural opal, moonstone or "sea opal", whatever a market tag says. That's fine: lots of people love it for exactly what it is. Our opalite pieces say "Synthetic" right in the title so nobody's guessing.

Good questions

Opalite questions people ask us

What does opalite mean?

In crystal tradition it's linked with fresh starts, clear communication and calm transitions. Since it's man-made, those meanings are modern ones. Most people just love the glow.

Is opalite real?

It's real glass, but it's not a natural stone. Opalite is made by people, not mined. Anyone selling it as natural opal isn't being straight with you.

What is opalite made of?

Glass with tiny particles mixed in that scatter light. That's what makes it glow blue on a dark background and peachy against the light.

Can opalite go in water?

Yes. It's glass, so water won't hurt it. Rinse, dry with a soft cloth, and you're done. Sun is fine too.

Is opalite the stone from the Taylor Swift song?

Same name. The song came out in 2025, and the glass has been a crystal-shop staple for years. If the song sent you here, welcome.
