The basics

So what is howlite, really?

Howlite is a borate mineral that forms in lumpy nodules that look a little like cauliflower. It was first described in 1868 from near Windsor, Nova Scotia.

It's named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist and mineralogist who first reported it. The veins are other minerals that filled cracks around the nodules.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • A white howlite bracelet goes with everything and is easy to stack.
  • A lot of folks keep a piece on the nightstand as part of a wind-down routine.
  • It's traditionally linked with calm and patience, so people hold one during quiet breathing or journaling.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Howlite

  • Water: quick rinse only
  • Sun: fine
  • It's soft and porous, so skip soaks, lotions and perfume.
  • Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and let it dry.
  • Store it apart from harder stones so it doesn't scratch.

Straight talk

Real, dyed or look-alike?

Natural howlite is white or cream with grey veins. Bright blue "turquoise" with dark web lines is very often dyed howlite or magnesite, sometimes sold without saying so. Dyed howlite can be pretty, it just isn't turquoise. If any of our pieces were dyed, the title would say so.

Good questions

Howlite questions people ask us

What does howlite mean?

It's traditionally linked with calm, patience and slowing down. People often keep it by the bed or wear it on the wrist as a reminder to take a breath.

Is howlite real or fake turquoise?

Howlite is a real mineral in its own right. Dyed blue, it's often sold as turquoise. Check a chip or drill hole: white showing through usually means dyed howlite.

Where does howlite come from?

It was first described in Nova Scotia in 1868 and named after Henry How. Today most of it comes from the United States and Turkey.

Can howlite go in water?

A quick wipe or rinse is fine, then dry it. It's porous, so don't soak it. For a traditional cleanse, try smoke, sound or a night on selenite.
