The basics

So what is aquamarine, really?

Aquamarine is blue beryl, the same mineral family as emerald and morganite. Tiny amounts of iron give it the blue.

It grows as long six-sided crystals. Gem-clear pieces go into jewellery, while cloudier ones become beads and tumbled stones.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • It's the March birthstone, so it's a favourite birthday gift.
  • It's traditionally linked with calm and clear speaking, so people wear it on days with a big talk.
  • A lot of folks keep a tumbled stone in a pocket or by the bath as a little seaside reminder.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Aquamarine

  • Water: fine
  • Sun: fine
  • It's fine in water. Rinse it and dry it with a soft cloth.
  • It's hard, but it can still chip if knocked, so store it on its own.
  • Skip harsh cleaners on jewellery. Warm water and mild soap are enough.

Straight talk

Real, treated or lab-made?

A lot of aquamarine on the market is gently heat-treated to clear away green tones and leave a purer blue. That's common and permanent. Blue glass and blue topaz are sometimes sold as aquamarine. If a piece of ours were ever dyed or man-made, the title would say so.

Good questions

Aquamarine questions people ask us

What does aquamarine mean?

It's traditionally linked with calm, courage and the sea. Sailors carried it for luck. Today it's loved as the March birthstone and for that clear seawater blue.

Is aquamarine the March birthstone?

Yes, aquamarine is the modern birthstone for March. Bloodstone is the other traditional March stone.

What colour is aquamarine?

Pale to medium blue, sometimes with a hint of green. The deeper and clearer the blue, the more prized it usually is.

Is aquamarine heat-treated?

Often, yes. Gentle heat clears away green tones and leaves a purer blue. It's a long-standing, permanent practice in the gem trade.

Can aquamarine go in water?

Yes, it's hard and fine in water. Rinse it, dry it with a soft cloth and keep it away from harsh cleaners.
