The basics

So what is amber, really?

Amber is fossilized tree resin, not a mineral. Sticky sap from ancient forests got buried, and over millions of years it hardened into this warm, glowing gem.

Baltic amber is the classic kind. Sometimes bark, a seed or even a tiny insect got caught in the resin and is still in there.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • It's light enough to wear all day, so most people choose it as a pendant or a pair of earrings.
  • Amber is traditionally linked with warmth and sunshine, and a lot of folks wear it on grey winter days.
  • Some people keep a piece near a window just to watch it glow.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Amber

  • Water: quick rinse only
  • Sun: can fade
  • Put on perfume, hairspray and lotion first, then your amber. Keep it away from heat and harsh cleaners.
  • It's very soft, so store it alone in a pouch. Long hours in strong sun can slowly darken it.

Straight talk

Real amber or a lookalike?

Common fakes are plastic, glass and copal, a much younger resin. Real amber feels warm and very light. Heads up: amber aragonite is a different stone, named for its colour, and amber incense is a scent. Our amber jewellery says Baltic amber in the title.

Good questions

Amber questions people ask us

What does amber mean?

Amber is traditionally linked with warmth, sunshine and good luck. In parts of Asia it was called the soul of the tiger and tied to courage. Most people just love the glow.

Is amber a crystal or a stone?

Neither, technically. It's fossilized tree resin, so it's organic, like pearl. People still wear it as a gem and keep it with their crystals.

How can I tell if amber is real?

Real amber is very light and feels warm, not cold like glass. It also floats in very salty water, while glass sinks. Copal floats too, so buy from a shop that names the source.

Is amber aragonite the same as amber?

No. Amber aragonite is a mineral, a brown or honey-coloured aragonite named for its colour. It's heavier and colder than real amber, and lovely in its own right.
