Soapstone Carving Kit - Intermediate

What is Soapstone? It’s a combination of crushed stone and oil that creates beautiful pieces of artwork. Few stones have the ability to produce such gorgeous results at ease!

Crafting is all the rage these days, but finding the right tools can be a little hectic. When it comes to art, everyone has their own style and preferences. From detailed carvings to abstract works of art, it’s something we all admire. But when you find out that the material is Soapstone, then your interest gets kicked up a notch!

We designed the perfect soapstone carving kit for beginners! This kit has six simple steps that will provide those with little to no experience with the tools to carve a 3D masterpiece.

This kit includes two natural soapstone blocks, a steel rasp carving tool, and four grit sanding papers: 100, 360, 600, and 2000. Natural hand-carved Brazilian soapstone blocks range in hardness and colour from light green to blue to brown.

Soapstone is a form of talc called steatite that has been used for thousands of years by many for the beauty of the stone and its unique natural properties. Native Americans on both the east and west coasts travelled long distances in canoes from the mainland to obtain the soft stone. The name “soapy” is derived from its soapy feel and softness. It has been used as early as the Late Archaic Period (3,000 to 5,000 years ago) for cooking slabs, smoking pipes, and ornaments; soapstone has natural properties of heat conduction and retention, can resist temperatures of 1000 °C, is bacteria resistant, and won’t absorb odours.

The best part about using Soapstone is the low-cost per piece, unlike other expensive materials. You can easily get creative with this medium without breaking the bank! With this soapstone carving tool by your side, you are all set to carve masterpieces at home or on a project site. To create perfect shapes, take your time as if carving out carvings for sculptures in museums. Your creativity will be flowing free and you will be leaving behind some beautiful work along with memories in stone!

The Rock Space Soapstone Carving Tool will help you get started in making your first carving. Even though it has been nickel plated to protect against rust, it should be stored clean and dry to make sure it stays sharp and lasts a lifetime.
