Garnet Prismatic Crystals in Mica Schist - Unique #1

Originating from South Africa, this rough garnet crystal shows natural prismatic formations with deep red colours still embedded in the mica-schist from which it grew. This crystal has a circular shape with the bottom and upper surface showing different prismatic patterns. There are a total of 15 garnet crystals all in different sizes, ranging from 4mm to 15mm in size.

Garnet is the name of a differently coloured mineral with similar chemical compositions. The same garnet is derived from the Latin word granatum, meaning pomegranate, because of the crystal’s red colour and seed-like shape. This particular garnet is named almandine, iron aluminum silicate, and is still in the mica-schist matrix in which it was formed.

During the middle ages, garnet was regarded as the gem of faith, truth, and constancy. Findings of garnet beads and inlaid work indicate widespread use of this gem in Egypt as far back as 3100BC. Today, the use of garnet is still in gemstones and jewellery making.
