In their fossilized state, these Moroccan ammonites are curled and enveloped in a matrix.
This small piece of history, delicately polished, exhibits natural patterns on the thin ammonite fossil. They’re called buttons because they’re fossil ammonites wrapped in a matrix measuring about 3” in diameter.
The fossils have been extensively polished to reveal crystalline formations within the small chambers. Septa, or divisions between chambers, are frequently apparent all the way into the centre curl.
