Dioptase is a rare copper cyclosilicate mineral. It occurs as small prismatic crystals on copper veins or as inclusions in Quartz.
Being an uncommon mineral with captivating teal to emerald green hues, Dioptase is a hit among mineral collectors. It is sometimes cut into gemstones. Dioptase can also be pulverized for use as a colouring pigment in paintings.
Dioptase is usually found in desert regions. The highest quality Dioptase specimens are found in Tsumeb, Namibia. Dioptase is also found in Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan and Arizona, USA.
Its colour ranges from a dark emerald-green to teal. It can be transparent to translucent, with a glassy to sub-adamantine luster.
With a Mohs hardness rating of 5, Dioptase is a soft mineral with a fragility like that of the tooth enamel. Raw specimens must be handled with great care.
