Make Your Very Own Stretch Bracelet at Home
Simple, sturdy, and best of all intentional! This is the exact method we recommend after you visit our Bead Bar in Kitchener :)
- Start with the wrist size you wrote down in store using our sizing tool (that’s your baseline). If you skipped that step, no worries, just measure at home: wrap a soft tape, string, or ribbon snugly around your wrist, mark the spot, and check it against a ruler.
- (optional) Add ½ - 1″ for comfort → that’s your finished bracelet size.
- Cut elastic to finished size + 3- 4″ slack so tying the knot is easy.
- Pre‑stretch elastic gently, string beads, tie a Surgeon’s Knot, secure, trim, hide, and roll it on.
What You’ll Need
- Your Bead Bar beads (choose what calls to you or set an intention with the Crystal Bible)
- Stretchy elastic cord (0.7–1.0 mm; make sure it fits through your bead holes)
- Scissors or snippers
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Optional: clear nail polish or jewellery glue
- Optional: a tiny piece of tape, a binder clip, or a temporary knot as a bead stopper
I use a little darning needle to help push it through the hole. If your elastic is thicker it's tricky to just pull it through without having the bracelet actually explode! (I am still finding beads on my living room floor LOL).
Step 1: Measure & Cut Your Elastic
Start here: Use the wrist size you wrote down in-store with our sizing tool. That’s your baseline.
If you didn’t size in‑store: wrap a soft tape, string, or ribbon around your wrist where you want the bracelet will sit. Mark where it meets, then measure that length on a ruler.
Calculate your lengths
- Add ½–1″ for comfort → this is your finished bracelet size.
- Then cut your elastic to finished size + 3 - 4″ (extra slack makes knot‑tying easy).
| Your wrist | Finished size | Elastic to cut |
|---|---|---|
| 6.0″ | 6.75–7.0″ | ~10.0–11.0″ |
| 6.5″ | 7.0–7.5″ | ~10.5–11.5″ |
| 7.0″ | 7.5–8.0″ | ~11.0–12.0″ |
No‑Measure Shortcut
- Cut ~12″ of elastic.
- String ~20 beads to start.
- Wrap around your wrist and adjust bead count until it feels right.
- Slide beads off, then restring in your final pattern.
Step 2: Pre‑Stretch the Elastic
Hold both ends and gently pull a few times to “relax” the cord. This prevents that loose, saggy look later.
Step 3: Lay Out Your Design & Start Stringing
Arrange your beads on a flat surface to preview your pattern. A center bead adds balance and a clean “start/finish” point.
Keep beads from sliding off (no special tools needed)
- Tape method: stick a small piece of tape on one end of the elastic.
- Binder clip / paper clip: clip gently to hold the cord.
- Temporary knot: tie a loose knot at one end (snip it off before you finish).
Begin stringing. If you have a bead with a slightly larger hole, start there, you can tuck your knot inside later for a polished finish.
Step 4: Tie a Secure Knot (Surgeon’s Knot)
- Overhand: Tie a simple overhand knot as usual.
- Extra pass: Feed one end back through the loop one more time (that’s the “surgeon” part).
- Even tension: Pull both ends firmly and evenly so the knot locks down.
Step 5: Secure, Trim & Hide the Knot
- Seal (optional): Dab a tiny bit of clear nail polish or jewellery glue on the knot.
- Let it set: Give it a minute or two to dry before stretching the bracelet.
- Trim: Snip the tails, leaving a tiny 1 - 2 mm nub. Don’t cut flush with the knot.
- Hide: Slide the knot into a nearby bead with a larger hole or a spacer.
Wear & Care
- Roll it on, don’t yank. Slide over your hand instead of stretching it wide.
- Keep away from perfume, lotions, and oils (they can weaken elastic over time).
- Avoid prolonged sun, hot cars, or showers/swimming with it on.
- If you wear it daily, expect to re‑string annually, handmade pieces age gracefully.
Common Mistakes & Easy Fixes
- Bracelet feels loose after a week: You likely skipped pre‑stretching. Re‑string and pre‑stretch first.
- Knot keeps slipping: Retie with a Surgeon’s Knot and pull both ends evenly; add a tiny dab of clear polish.
- Elastic snaps while tying: Cut longer (you need 3 - 4″ slack) and avoid over‑tight beads/too‑thick cord.
- Knot looks bulky: Hide it in a bead with a larger hole or switch to a slimmer spacer bead at the knot point.
- Beads keep sliding off while stringing: Use tape, a binder clip, or a temporary knot as a stopper.
