The basics

So what is smoky quartz, really?

It's the same mineral as clear quartz. The difference is tiny traces of aluminium inside the crystal.

Over a very long time, natural radiation from the surrounding rock changes those aluminium spots so they soak up light.

The very dark, almost black kind is called morion.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • It's traditionally linked with grounding, so people keep a point by the bed or the front door.
  • A big cluster on a shelf is a collector favourite.
  • Folks hold a small point or sphere while meditating or winding down at night.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Smoky Quartz

  • Water: fine
  • Sun: can fade
  • Water is fine. Rinse it and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Keep it out of strong, direct sun. Heat and UV light can fade the smoke over time.
  • Points chip at the tip, so give them their own spot on the shelf.

Straight talk

Natural smoke or lab-made?

Natural smoky quartz gets its colour underground. Some smoky quartz on the market is clear quartz irradiated in a lab to darken it, and it's very hard to tell apart. Heated smoky quartz can also turn yellow and get sold as citrine. If one of our pieces were treated, the title would say so.

Good questions

Smoky Quartz questions people ask us

What does smoky quartz mean?

It's traditionally linked with grounding, protection and letting go. Most people pick it because they love that warm, see-through smoky brown.

Is smoky quartz real?

Yes, it's natural quartz coloured by natural radiation underground. Some pieces on the market are lab-irradiated clear quartz, which is why treated pieces should be labelled.

Can smoky quartz go in water?

Yes. It's a hard quartz, so a rinse is fine. Just keep it out of strong sun, since the colour can fade.

How do you cleanse smoky quartz?

Rinse it under the tap, or try smoke, sound or a night on selenite. Skip sunbathing it.
