Physical Properties
Celestite is the strontium analogue of Baryte and a widespread strontium mineral. It’s a 3-3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a somewhat fragile crystal that needs proper care. There are multiple shades of celestite — you can find reddish, brownish, greyish and even greenish celestite, but its most sought-after variety is a soft light blue.
Celestite has vitreous or pearly lustre, and its transparency is translucent or transparent with a white streak. It has perfect cleavage, twin gliding and translation gliding parting, as well as an irregular fracture, making it difficult to facet.
