The basics

So what is citrine, really?

Citrine is yellow to orange quartz. Natural citrine gets its colour from traces of iron and is usually a pale, soft yellow. It's honestly pretty rare.

Most citrine you'll see started out as amethyst. Heat turns the purple into strong gold and orange, often with a whiter base on clusters and geodes. It's still real quartz, just changed by heat.

Rituals, not rules

How people use it

  • By the till or on a work desk. It's traditionally called the merchant's stone.
  • Tucked in a wallet or bag as a small, sunny token.
  • As a birthday gift for anyone born in November.

These are traditions people enjoy, not promises. Pick the one you keep coming back to.

Care

Looking after your Citrine

  • Water: fine
  • Sun: can fade
  • Fine in water. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Skip long sunbaths on the windowsill. Natural citrine can fade over time.
  • Store it apart from softer stones so nothing gets scratched.

Straight talk

Natural or heat-treated?

Honest answer: most citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst. It's bright orange or gold, often with a white base. Natural citrine is paler and much less common. We label heat-treated pieces in the title. Dyed quartz and glass sold as citrine also exist; they tend to look too even and too bright.

Good questions

Citrine questions people ask us

What does citrine mean?

Citrine is traditionally linked with warmth, optimism and good fortune. Shop owners have long kept one near the till, which is why it's nicknamed the merchant's stone.

Is most citrine heat-treated amethyst?

Yes. Most citrine sold today is amethyst heated until it turns gold or orange. It's still quartz. Natural citrine is a paler yellow and rarer, and we mark heat-treated pieces in the title.

Is citrine the November birthstone?

Yes. Citrine shares November with topaz as a modern birthstone, so it's a popular gift for November birthdays.

Which chakra is citrine linked with?

Citrine is usually linked with the solar plexus chakra, just above the belly button. Its sunny yellow colour is a big part of why.
